Victorian Goldfields Railway
coronavirus COVID-19 update: 19th May 2020

When will we start running trains again?

We are committed to the health and wellbeing of the community as well as our volunteers.

We will be abiding by the information and directions of the Victorian Government in reopening our services.
Currently, we are unable to provide any guidance as to when we can safely start running trains.

Additionally, even when restrictions are lifted, we will carry out our own risk assessment to ensure we can provide the safest experience possible.
We are not accepting any pre-bookings until the entire heritage railway sector receives Government guidance and we will most likely recommence with a revised timetable.

Please watch this website & our social media for updates.

How has the railway been utilising this shutdown?

We are using this shutdown to carry out major track rehabilitation - check out the works at: Civil Blog, focus on the construction of the new Castlemaine operational facility and moving swiftly ahead on the rebuilding of our faithful servant, steam locomotive K160 in conjunction with our partners Steamrail at Newport Workshops, Melbourne - check out the works at: Mechanical Blog

While we are managing to achieve great things during this trying time, all this work still comes at a cost. Currently we have no source of income and as such we are heavily relying on donations (tax deductible on amounts of $2.00) so please consider donating to our great railway to allow us to keep achieving great things - Donate Now

Thank you to those who have and continue to support us - it's allowing us to turn this otherwise devastating pandemic into a productive break of trains.

We look forward to seeing you on our trains as soon as it's possible.

What are my Travel Options?

Scroll down for timetable

From Maldon    We leave Maldon at 10.30am and 2.45 pm.
*The 10.30am train spends 45 minutes at Castlemaine to turn the engine and returns you to Maldon at 12.45pm. Or you may choose to stay on in Castlemaine for the afternoon and catch the later 4.00 pm train back to Maldon arriving at 4.45pm.
*The 2.45pm train gives half an hour at Castlemaine and returns you to Maldon at 4.45 pm

From Castlemaine    We leave Castlemaine at 12.00 pm.
*You have 2 hours to explore Maldon and have lunch and we return you to Castlemaine by 3.30pm.
*VGR trains connect with V/Line fast trains to and from Melbourne at Castlemaine station. View V/line timetables
*Castlemaine is less than 1 1/2 hours from Melbourne by road up the Calder Freeway.

Travel Suggestion... To enjoy a great day out, drive or catch the V/line train to Castlemaine to connect with our late morning (12.00 pm) train to Maldon where you have 2 hours to enjoy a leisurely lunch in one of the cafes or pubs and explore the lovely little goldfields town. Then relax on the 2.45 pm departure from Maldon, maybe enjoying a drink from the bar in first class, before arriving back at Castlemaine in the mid afternoon (3.30pm) connecting with V/line services.
